Black women often feel compelled to adopt a "facade of conformity" to fit into predominantly white workplace cultures. This includes:

Adjusting Communication Style

To avoid being labeled as “aggressive,” Black women may change how they speak or limit their contributions.

Conforming to Appearance Standards

They may feel pressure to change their hairstyles (such as braids, afros or locs) or attire to fit white beauty standards.

Emotional Suppression

Fear of being labeled as “too emotional” can lead Black women to hide their feelings at work.

Softening Leadership Style

Wanting to avoid the  "angry Black woman" trope,  Black women feel more pressure to negotiate more and soften their tones and demeanors when they are leaders.
